Will ISIS Attack the 2016 Rio Olympics?

With the Olympics set to start tonight, security officials are concerned over the potential for a serious ISIS attack on the games.  Brazilian officials have already been taken to task over the lax security environment in around the games. With terror just one of the many security issues facing the games Brazil’s security services are clearly inexperienced in something of this magnitude.

In the days leading up to tonight’s opening games security officials have stepped up there work.  They have become so concerned that 13 different Israeli security firms are aiding the protection of the games. In fact, one man has already been caught with a gun.

How Will ISIS Attack?

For most security experts on the look out for a well planned mega attack, they are looking at ISIS’s operational strategy the wrong way. Time and again, ISIS has been able to get passed security officials by utilizing nearly spontaneous reactions by ISIS supporters to overwhelming propaganda. Stabbings, car rammings, and lone gun men are far harder to predict and control than a well constructed terror cell.  The worst thing security officials can do is go out of their way to protect against something that is far too complex for ISIS and miss the anonymous attendee ready to ounce.

The Battle of Dabiq

The battle of Dabiq, a mythological battle at the end of the days predicted by Islam to take place between the forces of the Mahdi/Caliph and the countries of the world is necessary according to Islam in order to usher the end times in.  The Olympics provide and excellent opportunity for ISIS to wage an international battle of Dabiq against what they see as the forces of the world gathered at the Olympics.

So will there be an attack. No one knows, but security officials better listen well to the private Israeli firms that are already there.  Thousands of lives may depend on it.

US Begins Airstrikes in Libya Against ISIS Targets

Responding to the UN backed government in Libya’s request for help against ISIS, the US began bombing strategic areas in Libya.

Ironically the core stronghold of ISIS is the hometown of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Sirte is extra important to ISIS as it is a Mediterranean coastal city across the sea from Europe. This makes the second most important conquest outside of Syria and Iraq.

The US bombing campaign is focused mainly on pushing the ISIS militants from Sirte in order to allow the Libyan government to go in and take over.

ISIS Takes Hostages and Slits Priest’s Throat in Northern France

Jacques Hamel

The hostage event in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, Normandy, France is over, but not before the attackers slit the priest’s throat and taking 2 nuns and 2 parishoners hostage.  One witness recalled that the attackers screamed Daesh [ISIS] while they slit the priest’s throat.

Response from Marie LePen, the French far right leader was swift on Twitter. “Horror again in SaintEtienneduRouvray. The nature of the attack clearly makes one fear another attack from islamist terrorists.”

A spokesman for the interior ministry said the knifemen were shot dead as they exited the church. The alarm was reportedly raised by one of the hostages who managed to escape.

France’s Le Point reporting that the priest killed in the attack was 86-year-old Jacques Hamel, ordained in 1958, although this has not yet been confirmed. The website also says multiple sources say the two men identified themselves as ISIS supporters.

The incident comes among a swarm of radical Islamic incidents across Western Europe, unnerving citizens who had up until the last 10-15 days begrudgingly put up with a flood of Syrian refugees and other muslim migrants. The scales now are clearly tipping against the current EU policy.  The solution is not clear as the migrant population in Europe does not seem to be gong anywhere, while Erdogan looks to unleash a new flood of refugees from Syria on the European mainland.

Normandy is but another stop along the way towards an Islamic indiced chaos across the European continent.

Hezbollah Drone Maybe a Harbringer for Renewed Fighting with Israel

The collective wisdom is that Hezbollah is too caught up with supporting the Assad government’s fight against ISIS to attack Israel, but Hezbollah’s penetration of Israel’s airspace in the Golan yesterday using a drone, may be an indication that things are about to change.

The IDF fired two Patriots at the drone and missed their target.  The drone made it back to its origin in Syria.  For Hezbollah, drones are a perfect form of both psychological warfare and reconnaissance. The important question is whether this is more of the same from Hezbollah or should Israel be prepared for renewed combat against Hezbollah.

In the last year the area West of the Golan has been the scene of warfare between Jihadist like Al-Nusra or ISIS and Hezbollah and Syrian Government Forces. There have been stray shells that penetrated the Golan and other incidents, but Hezbollah until recently has stayed focused on extraditing the Assad regime from the grips collapse.

The ramifications of renewed fighting between Hezbollah and Israel could be wide. The IDF will have to contend with Iranian troops as well as the Syrian army which is looking to raise morale. Fighting the “Zionists” is an excellent way to do that. The real unknown is Russia’s reaction.  Putin has taken a liking to Israel and wants it within his sphere of influence, yet is fully aware that he has supported Iran, Hezbollah, and Syria in their fight against ISIS.  At some point Putin will have to make a decision on which party to support for the long term. Renewed combat between Israel and Hezbollah will bring that decision to the forefront.
